1. Mural on The Merc Project - COMPLETED Fall 2012
The side of the Emory Mercantile facing Linden Street is a billboard waiting to happen, and Emory &
Henry is lucky enough to have some immensely talented art students matriculating through our
curriculum. Our vision was to utilize this space and the talents of our art students to make that side of
The Merc an Emory & Henry-themed mural designed by an art student. In September, Student
Government sponsored a contest aimed at art students (but open to all students) to submit a design
proposal for this mural. Our vision was to have the College's Executive Council select the top three or
four submissions and then have the entire student body vote on which design would ultimately be
painted on The Merc. However, we only received two submissions, one of which was approved by
Executive Council, and the mural was selected in that manner. The selection, designed by seniors Cat
Richardson and Brian Stanley will be painted on the side of The Merc by the end of the fall semester

2. Gate Restoration Project
The stone arches in front of Hillman Hall that once served as a sort of entryway into the College now look somewhat dated and out of place on our campus, according to some students. Rather than urge the College to move or remove these fixtures—they were, after all, a gift from the E&H Class of 1927-- our administration is sponsoring a landscaping project to restore the gates and tie them into the landscape of the College once more. Originally, we intended to install a hedge extending south between the road and the sidewalk from each of the stone arches. This idea was not received well by the college administration, so we revised our plan and instead are working with a local landscape architect to install a three-tiered landscaping design, with each tier building up to the arches. This revamped plan
will also cost significantly less than the gate restoration would have. We plan to complete this project during the spring semester as it is a better time for planting.
3. Picnic Tables Project - COMPLETED Spring 2012
Our third project comes in response to the student complaint that there is a lack of usable outdoor space on campus. We plan to install four or five wooden picnic tables on the grassy area between McGlothlin-Street and Miller Halls. This is adjacent to a high-traffic area and we expect the tables to be used by faculty for outdoor classes or by students who have a break between classes atop the hill but do not want to return all the way to the residence halls during that break. The area will be a non-smoking area. The Cabinet has assigned first-year student Audrey Ford as a liaison to the College's Landscaping Committee to help with communication. Our hope is to involve the community
by contacting a local high school shop class to come to campus and help construct the tables. This would embrace Emory & Henry's tradition of involving the community while also bringing potential students to campus. Student
Government has budgeted the funds for these tables this semester.
